ThePointsGuyis an air travel brainiac . So he started a blog full of tips for getting the right flights at the in force prices . And with Christmas lurking around the corner , he ’s here facilitate you regain a flight back home for as few penny as potential .
A couple weeks ago , I write about the honorable times to buyThanksgiving airfare , and now it ’s time to start considering your December holiday travel plan .
As I said before , it can be darn near impossible to envision out when incisively you should buy your holiday airfares - after all , we ’ve probably all experienced that sinking feeling of see a transportation that we ’ve just grease one’s palms go lower . Then again , I think it finger worse not to buy a fare because you think it will go lower only to see it rocket .

This is especially true when it follow to the vacation , typically one of the wakeless traveling periods of the year , and a sentence when masses have the least flexibility since they want to spend the most time possible either celebrating with loved one ( or getting away from them by heading to a fab beach or ski gradient ! ) .
In my Thanksgiving post , I verbalise about usingKayak’sfantastic scheme , which gathers historical datum and tracks airfares over certain periods to help you decide when to lock in your travel plans and buy those fares .
Well , the good folks over there send out me another useful chart plotting the vicissitude of airfare spikes and valleys over the course of December , which I ’ve put in below . No surprisal here , airfare shoot up astronomically as Christmas 24-hour interval approaches – it see like the increases become exponential right around December 18 or 20 . What might be surprising , however , is that in the workweek lead up until then , they are actually pretty downcast compare to the rest of the year , and there are a few dips that think of airfares on certain days ( looks like the 12 and 13 , and possibly the 16 and 17 ) are downright trashy ! So , if you have a few extra daylight off , or a short flexibility in your schedule , you might actually be able to make some fantastic deals .

That goes to show that Kayak ’s credo that , “ strategical reservation , not other reservation , is the cay to engender the expert deals . ”
Meanwhile , I also get a bit of in - house psychoanalysis from the Kayak people , and here ’s what they have to say :
The average airfare for domestic traveling in the US around December 25 is $ 433 , and do your booking during the first hebdomad of December up until the 10th of the month render the dear deals - about 6 % below average - before prices begin to prove again . For domesticated fare , the highest vacation prices were actually paid by the early birds back in July , who pay up up to 27 % more than the rest of us for their tickets .

For external travel start in the US , the intermediate airfare around December 25 is a thumping $ 1,251 . For these flights , the lowest fares were book back in July ( sorry procrastinator ! ) and were a nice 16 % below the middling fare , while the mellow prices are pay in recent December ( last - minute ) and are an amazing 40 % above norm !
So the takeaway is , if you have n’t booked your domestic holiday change of location yet , there ’s still hope - just be merry the first week of December , and if you find something that fits your budget , book it because prices will only rise after that .
For international travelers … well , begin thinking about next year !
