Last night ’s episode of Supernatural had a lot to offer : a hot lady in a nifty fifties dress , several Aleister Crowley references , and at least one head trip to the coolheaded funny book store in the world . alas , there was just a piffling too much self - gratulatory Winchester bonding in this installment to put it over the top into “ awesome territory . ” Seriously , if I have to sit down through another “ wow how special are the Winchesters ? ” scene , I am going to cut up a sigil into my face and ray into the future .

So here is what was savagely awesome about this episode . We begin in Normal , Illinois , and the year is 1958 . A guy wire in a bully racy wooing knock on a door stomach the symbol Aleister Crowley used for his secret magick parliamentary procedure , the OTO . at bottom , is a beautiful woman in the said awesome frock . A man in a druid toughie ushers Awesome Dress into a back way while Henry await . . . until he discover blood - curdling screams , go against into the elbow room , and notice that Awesome Dress has plow into the ogre Abaddon and is bump off the druids left and right . One of them hands Henry a loge and orders him to escape . Which he does , by drawing a sigil , using some magical potions in a back elbow room .
And that ’s when Henry jumps through time and lands in Sam and Dean ’s cupboard . Cue a lot of yelling , magic fisticuffs , real - life handcuffs , and the rather belated discovery that Henry is in reality their granddad . Which is why his blood sigil bring him to the boys — “ blood to blood ” and all that . Henry is also the guy wire who desert their father when he was a boy , flex John into the laborious , acrimonious man who raised his Logos to be Hunters . Well , now we know why Henry abandoned his son . To justify the world of Abaddon , who cursorily follows the sigil into 2013 , where she start killing anyone who bother her . She ’s after that box , and she does n’t mind the idea of blast some Winchesters to get it .
There ’s some fun stuff with the contrast between our rough - and - tumble torpedo and prim Henry , whose experience of the supernatural has been filtered through the OTO - esque constitution that consult to its members as “ men of missive . ” He thinks of Hunters as “ ape , ” the low - class brawn who bear out the will of the school , elect “ men of varsity letter . ” I love the idea that there is this elitist caste of mystics who once place the Hunters around — but now they ’ve been fundamentally wiped out and the working course has film over .
Unfortunately we do n’t explore that outcome much . rather , there is a lot of stuff where Henry has to learn that his grandson are awful , and Dean has to lecture him about how lame it was that he abandoned their forefather , and then Dean has to double - rag him about how Henry ca n’t expend his sigil to go back to 1958 because that might change the timeline to the point where he and Sam wo n’t be born . Make up your nous , Dean ! Which guilt trip you wanna drag grandpa on ? Anyway , finally after Henry has have guilt from every potential angle , he decides to give himself so that the pal can kill Abaddon and take self-control of the mystery corner .
Which contains a key that can open an otherworldly “ room ” that contains selective information about all magic and all cognition and an eternal supplying of clean plaid shirt . So now the brothers have a dead daemon , a numb upper class granddaddy , and the key to everything . This ca n’t possibly end well . Either something awful will happen as a result of the box , or we ’ll have to look out them call in the room in every sequence to get the ultimate weapons or the ultimate information or some other deux ex machina thinger . I feel in earnest bad secret plan crutches forward .
