In the latest X - Men picture show , Professor Xavier called heterochromia a mutation . Turns out this term , where your eye are two dissimilar colors , is a little more complicated than that .
Heterochromia can mean having each eye be a dissimilar color . It can mean one of your eye has a patch with a different color in it . It can be there from nascency , or can grow over the twelvemonth . And often it has nothing to do with mutant .
If an oculus gets pigment at all , it ’s due to melanocytes – particular cells that pump out the paint melanin . A mountain of melanocytes intend a brown eye . A few means unripened or hazel . Very few entail a blue eye . The melanocytes do n’t develop in the emerging eyes , though . They travel to the eyes . They journey because they ’re told to travel from a variety of complicated sources , any of which can give way . If the melanocytes from one eye or one part of an eye do n’t get told to travel due to damage to the encephalon or some kind of hold in the signal , they do n’t go anywhere , leaving one eye lightly pigment . Alternately , they can move to an middle but get destroy or damaged one site . This again result in dissimilar pigmentation .

Then there is the periodic blackening of the heart . The middle is just a large ball of goo . Things can seep into it . When injury pass off , matter can settle in the heart and darken it . And then there ’s Bowie Eye . Singer and goblin king David Bowie catch in a Browning automatic rifle combat and sustained damage to one eye . One pupil is permanent dilated , so the eye wait darker than the other .
But what about actual mutation ? Well , it can happen . One gene variation causing heterochromia is take care in Waardenburg syndrome . The alter genes disrupt melanocyte movement in all sort of areas of the soundbox . People with Waardenburg syndrome have patches of cutis that are dissimilar colors as well as different center colouration . ( It also is associated with different degrees of hearing loss and a slenderly unlike shape to the head . ) Different colored eyes can also be due to chimerism , when two fertilized eggs fuze to become one embryo . The unlike sets of cistron remain behave on their own teaching , but mould together to make one someone , who can have a blue right centre and a brown forget one . Lastly there is one of the rarest causes of heterochromia , one exercise set of cistron in one cell mutate early fetal exploitation and take the development of that part of the body .
So while Xavier was talking a good game in that movie , it ’s not just mutation that changes eye color . ( I like his spoken communication better , though . Very great . )
