Crime Scene : Installation for 2 Computers ( Jacobsen , 2003 )

Gizmodo : Your task , “ Crime Scene : Installation for 2 computing equipment ” essay the legality of file sharing over the Internet . What were you essay to achieve with the project ? And why was the project illegal in Denmark ?

MJ : For many year I was always discuss new medium art with folks from the art humanity — gallery owners and mass from museum . They all seemed very interested in this new medium artwork scene . But it always stop up with this new medium art being defined as multimedia art — stuff with computers showing telling interactive artwork on a screen or picture on a rampart . So I want to get off from the multimedia thing , which I fundamentally see as an idea the computer diligence has invented to sell us information processing system as home entertainment center . I want to make something that was utterly tiresome ! The piece would comprise of very dumb office - flair computers . And it should not be interactive nor should it show any fancy graphics . And the idea of the piece — file share-out — is something I personally have been quite baffled by the discrepancy between the legal stuff and what belong on in the real reality . And at the same time I really tried to figure out what was legal and what not . But in the end I gave up . So I made this installation with the simplest potential apparatus : A meshwork of 2 computers sharing files — just sharing the files . Not utilizing the filing cabinet , not using them for anything , not play the MP3 filing cabinet . After show the slice at the Electrohype Gallery in Sweden , I was asked by a group of museum curator and public servants from the Ministry of Culture , if I want to participate in a study regarding problem with showing new art in museums . We had a lot of meetings with representatives from the music diligence and with attorneys . It all ended up with a paper saying that the piece is illegal to sell or even to exhibit in Denmark .

Gizmodo : With “ Turntablist personal computer ” you combined a lazy Susan with an old PC and converted it into a waiter that set aside for remote access code over the Internet . reckon on the aloofness and location of the visiting exploiter , the turntable will spin in certain focusing and for a specific amount of meter ( i.e. If you are west of the project and far by it will birl counterclockwise and make for the entire record , whereas if you are east and closelipped to the labor it will only play a little amount and spin clockwise ) . The Internet is often thought of as a technology that rule out length as a mediating factor in connectivity . Why are you re - premise aloofness as a key ingredient to online interaction ?

MJ : That is on the nose the point ! The part plays on the conception of local and remote . Even when a engineering tries to remove length , it brings stress on the idea that you have to accept there is something live on at other remote places . Some geezerhood ago I scan the Koran Vom Verschwinden der Ferne by Peter Weibel . In this rule book there is a comprehensive reappraisal of telecommunication and art . And fundamentally not much has changed since we had first form of electrical communications like cable television - telegrams , radio and telephony . The amphetamine of communication might have quicken , but culturally I still find the world a huge place .

mightiness of Mind / Memory ( Jacobsen , 2004 )

Daredevil Born Again Episode 1 Matt Murdock

Gizmodo : “ Power of Mind / Memory ” consists of a web server powered by a couple hundred potatoes ( The Danish internal solid food ) that hosts an interview with head of stave lieutenant - colonel Poul Dahl . As the Solanum tuberosum dry out , the interview fleet away and the text is interchange by heart symbols . Is this project a comment on the temporality of constitutional power sources ? Or is it a political assertion about the fleeting nature of negative sentiments by this public characteristic ?

MJ : I was work on my computer one eventide and short Mr. Dahl was on goggle box defending the utilization of torture . He was a very noetic and civil speaker . So I made this thing where a collective of potatoes was trying to keep his words live . But I guess it is an homage to the power of nature . The Irish potato are organic and frail — they go , rot and fleet away . And they take the surly words with them — to dust .

“ Skip ( Jacobsen , 2004 )

M101 Pinwheel Galaxy

Gizmodo : Skip was an experimentation in building a “ responsive record thespian that replaces the received stylus with two ultra - lustrous blanched LED that are modulated by four sine undulation at different frequencies , while a 12 ” mirror disc rotating on the lazy Susan meditate the modulate light . The light-emitting diode vacillate their elucidation based on vibrations sense from the floor . What was your drift for building this task ? Also , “ Deep Maus ” connect a computer mouse with the turntable to create phone from the simple act of placing a mouse on a spinning book ? Why is this strong-arm connection of the two physical object authoritative ?

MJ : Skip and Deep Maus are establish on my personal captivation with parallel audio frequency and vinyl records . It started in the eighties , where I ran a record label with a champion of mine . We published a circumstances of really bizarre records — anything from noisy electronics to acoustic guitar duos . And when I got involved in medium art — or more specific net.art — I made a whole bunch of slice with reference to record . One of these is still on-line ; Everorange from 1996 . ( http://www.artnode.org/art/jacobsen/eart/orange/norange.html )

Deep Maus ( Jacobsen , 2001 )

Star Wars Battlefront2

Gizmodo : What projects are you presently working on ? How are they similar or dissimilar from your preceding projects ?

MJ : I m trying to do more piece based on eccentric customs - built gadget . I m really trying to move away from the graphic substance abuser user interface ; doing tangible man that don t attend like muscle technology ” . I would much rather favour my thing looking quirky and boring . So at the moment I am re - doing an installation for a show in France . And most of the work actually goes into removing the GUI - based interface and going for a version that is console table / command - descent based .
