We ’ve advanced the theory , in the past , that all of Game of Thrones isthe war between Varys and Littlefinger . When we catch up with Conleth Hill , who plays Varys , we had to call for him about this . Plus Hill told us why Varys and Littlefinger are opposites , but Varys and Tyrion are the same .
Warning : There ’s a large book plunderer at the end of this interview .
When we talk to him at the Entertainment Weekly company at SDCC on Saturday Nox , Hill was careful to say that he did n’t know if it was on-key that everything that chance on the show is really about his character spar with Varys . “ But I can see how that assumption is made . ”

And he explained to us what he sees as being the heart of their dispute : Varys is in party favor of order , while Littlefinger wants chaos . “ So they ’re honorable polar opposite word . ”
base on this most recent time of year , Littlefinger seems to haveoutsmarted himself , whilea lot of his scheme have backfired horribly . And meanwhile , Varys is act all his pieces into lieu for a Daenerys winnings . So is Varys actually winning his secret plan with Littlefinger , maybe ? Hill says that he conceive Littlefinger ’s schema are actuate by pure egotism and selfishiness , while Varys is a much less selfish manipulator — so perchance Littlefinger ’s strategy are harder to accomplish because they require him to gather power personally ?
In any cause , Varys say that “ at the moment , it seems ” as though Varys ’ only ambitions are for others to advance power .

But does Varys worry , even a little , that he ’s stake on the untimely horse by backing Daenerys ? She ’s been acting awfully impetuously late , after all . “ No , I do n’t think he does ” doubt Daenerys , say Hill . Varys would n’t have gone all the fashion to Meereen if he had any question . “ I think his hand was force a little in the TV show , because of Tyrion ’s murder of his Fatherhood — and the fact that he help [ Tyrion ] relief valve . I think he knew he had to entrust as well , otherwise he would have been held responsible by Cersei . So that was his motive for getting out . ”
But now that Varys is out of Westeros , there ’s no doubt in in the Spider ’s nous , says Hill . “ The Targaryen restoration has been a long - hold ambition of his . ”
And in season six , you may probably expect a lot more of Tyrion and Varys working together , and arguing about the nature of ability and judge , as they seek to get the city of Meereen back on track , says Hill . “ They ’re now left in the position , at the oddment of serial publication five , where they have to restore order to a city that ’s in chaos . I think that ’s their challenge , chiefly . And they ’ll probably have a scrap of quipping and squawk along the agency . ”

Does Lord Varys actually deal what happens to Meereen , or is it just a dry run for take over Westeros later on ? “ I think he like the challenge , ” say Hill . “ I recall he likes get a metropolis in parliamentary law , and using everything , all of his faculties and his spy meshwork to get that chunk rolling . ”
Plus Varys was enslaved himself , when he was a child — and he obviously has a sure amount of sympathy for the Unsullied . “ He has a lot in common with [ the Unsullied ] because they ’re eunuchs , and he has a lot in plebeian with Tyrion because they were both victims , and they ’re both survivors . ”
Book spoiler ahead … .

But do n’t expect Varys to sneak back into Westeros himself and start up assassinate people himself , like he does in the books . Hill says that it ’s a long mode back to Westeros , and he does n’t imagine they ’d want to show Varys hiding out in Westeros — because that ’s not awfully interesting to film .
