When NPRrevealed its list of finalistsfor its “ Top 100 Science - Fiction and Fantasy Books ” survey , we were hit by how divers and wide - ranging that list was . Nowthe actual list of the 100 great account book has been unwrap … and it ’s quite a chip more conservative .

As NPR points out , the last selection for the top 100 SF / illusion book of account tend to be heavily tip towards books that were written a foresightful time ago and have had time to build a fanbase . They ’re also shift hard towards books that have go movie or television adaptations . And they ’re overwhelmingly by fellow . ( A sight of whom are British , inquisitively . ) The fantasy winners tend to be the ones which sport a straight - up battle of good versus evilness , and the science fiction winners tend to be the ones which chew over the zeitgeist when they were written .

One matter ’s for sure — these selections reflect the voice of quite a large numeral of mass . As NPR notes :
give the consuming response – over 60,000 votes – the truly democratic title would have been very difficult to unseat : For your best-loved Word to qualify for#1 , it would have to have garnered more than the 29,701 ( ! ) votes received by The Lord of the Rings . Yeah , good luck with that .
Take , for example , the Word comin ’ in at#2 , The Hitchhiker ’s Guide to the Galaxy , which time an astonishing 20,069 ballot . That ’s a vainglorious step down , but still station it head and shoulders above#3 , Ender ’s Game , at 16,141 votes .

John Scalzi , whose Old Man ’s War made the inclination , is neverthelessperturbed by some of the clamant skip :
By and big it ’s a pretty near listing of books , with some very conspicuous omissions that tell us more about the voters of the poll than the books under retainer . A list of the top 100 science fiction / fantasy novels without entries by Brin , Brunner , Butler , Cherryh , Delany or Silverberg ( to name some obvious names ; there are of course of study others ) is going to have fans of various stripes shaking their straits .
Scalzi shares his own leaning of ten books that really should have been in the top 100 , include Delany ’s Dhalgren and Octavia Butler ’s Kindred . What are your ten books that should have made the cutting ?
