The conception for the Vanke Pavilion incorporate three approximation drawn from Chinese culture relate to intellectual nourishment : the shi - tang , a traditional Taiwanese dining student residence ; the landscape , the fundamental element to life ; and the dragon , which is metaphorically related to farming and maintenance . The marquee is clad in more than 4,000 red metalize tiles that Libeskind design with the Italian company Casalgrande Padana . The geometrical ceramic panels not only make an expressive pattern that is reminiscent of a Draco - same skin , but also have extremely sustainable ego - cleansing and aura purification properties . The three - dimensional surface is cake with a metallic colouration that changes as light and point of view shift . At time it will appear as deep deep red , then a dazzling gold , and even , at certain angles , a brilliant white . The tiles are instal with a state - of - the - artistry cladding support system that gives a rhythmic pattern and numerical form to an otherwise supple , torquing shape . Two coil stairs , echoing the form , climb up the marquee to the south , and to the north from the Lake Arena entrance , serving both as circulation and seating .
