Have you ever found yourself thinking , “ Mice are pretty great , but would n’t it be awesome if they were more ostentatious ? ” That was apparently the thinking behind this 2008 experiment that test to turn regular mice into wine-coloured snob .
The researchers at Japan ’s Hiroshima University began with a simple enough goal – to instruct shiner to tell the difference between introductory kinds of vino . This , as it turns out , was n’t that hard :
We essay performance of mice in discrimination of liquor olfactory perception by Y - maze behavioral assay . Thirsty shiner were initially trained to choose the odor of a red vino in the Y - maze . After successful training ( > 70 % concordance for each trained mouse ) , the individual mouse were capable to discriminate the learned blood-red wine from other hard drink , including livid wine , rosé wine , sake , and plum liqueur .

But that ’s not all that impressive , is it ? Any rube can recount the difference of opinion between white and red winnings . The research worker prove to take their work further by teaching the mouse to distinguish different brand of crimson wine-colored , but they soon learnedthey were tamper in God ’s domain …
However , when the mice were tested to name okay remainder between 2 brand of red wine , their carrying into action importantly wide-ranging among the case-by-case trained mice . Among 10 mouse tested , 2 mice were able to discriminate between the blood-red wines ( > 75 % harmony ) whereas 6 mice fail to spot between them ( 50 - 67 % concordance , where hazard could be presume to be 50 % ) .
Although , as the researchers speculate , it might just be the mice like what they liked , and no amount of reward or conditioning could persuade them to choose a different wine :

More importantly , 2 other mice march lower than 30 % concord , indicating that they were more draw in to the nonrewarded red vino compare with the learned one . This final result suggested that the private mouse directed attention to different subsets of volatile components emanating from the rewarded red vino , when they were trained to choose the liquor smell in the Y - maze .
So what ’s the takeaway from all this ? The researchers point out they “ honour that the olfactory care of mouse could be modified through their learning experiences ” , but I do n’t think that ’s the really authoritative thing . I ’m just happy to do it that the next time I ’m in a restaurant , it wo n’t just be the waiter judging me for my wine selection – the mice will be at it as well . I may need to start move to better eatery , but that ’s beside the full stop …
