The reality of science , engineering , applied science and math ( STEM ) is an unforgiving one for charwoman . Underrepresented for years in these industries , many programs take aim to create engaging opportunities for adult female to foster interest in STEM from a young age and beyond .
While fair sex make up 40 % of the total U.S. work force , they occupy less than a one-fourth of STEM industry job , fit in to a survey by theU.S. Department of Commerce .
Stepping up to spotlight the diversity in her field , political platform engineerIsis Wengerwrote onMediumearlier this month about her problematical experience of being a fair sex in the tech industry .
“ I ’ve had man shake off dollar eyeshade at me in a professional office ( by an employee who works at that company , during study hour ) , ” Wengerwrote . “ I ’ve had an engineer on remuneration at a bootcamp message me to explicitly “ be friends with benefit ” while I was in the interview process at the school he wreak for . ”

In an interview with theWashington Post , Wenger was demand for her cerebration about why the hashtag caught on so quickly : “ … because it ’s not just my message . It addresses a trouble that many citizenry of different gender and ethnic backgrounds confront . ”
“ Especially when I was first start up out in the industry , people were very arch . There ’s no way I could have really been an railroad engineer , correct ? They had pretty low expectations of me . ”
