Dragon Ageis one of my favorite RPG series of all time — cry out toDragon Age II , forever The Best One – but there is one matter about it I have systematically hated : Dragon Ageloves itself some jumbo spiders . I’vebeen an arachnophobefor much of my spirit , which has often clashed with my beloved of phantasy , shiver my direction throughLord of the Rings ‘ Shelob tantrum and the ilk with my eyes peering through finger . While I ’ve set about good at face up that reverence of both existent spider and digital or cinematic one , Dragon Age‘s special flavor of spider - terror hasalwaysgotten to me . Thankfully , that ’s apparently about to change with therelease ofThe Veilguardlater this month .
Earlier this week , BioWare give away the slate of accessibility options forthe fourthDragon Agegame , and my fellow eagle - eyed wanderer - fearers noticed that an arachnophobia fashion was not among the tilt of toggles . Arachnophobia modes have become increasingly vernacular in plot of late as a way to test and ease people ’s triggers while still allowing them to play games they would otherwise be totally fine in . Some edition of the musical mode hit spider enemies completely , some substitute them with dissimilar models , some allow you to even specifically modify spider and wanderer - like models in various point to fit your own tolerance level . hellhole , evenJedi : Survivorlast yr had one , for a creature that was n’t all that wanderer - like compare to the(absolutely terrifying ) Wyyyschokksfrom the first secret plan . But I appreciated its cellular inclusion nonetheless !
But given BioWare ’s desire to promoteThe Veilguardas a game embrace a diverseness of players — and the serial publication ’ traditional history of let in elephantine wanderer opposition — people were surprised not to see a standardised modal value offered forThe Veilguard . Sure , PC gamers could simply just wait for mods to move out spiders from the game ( it ’s the only way I can replay the serial now , honestly ) , but that would n’t facilitate console players without entree to mod . The good tidings , however , is that there ’s no need for an arachnophobia mode in the new game : becauseVeilguardis the firstDragon Agegame to not have spider enemies at all . The tidings was confirmed in a mail on theDragon Agesubreddit by a Bioware community manager Blackhairvioleteyes ( viaIGN ) , which merely stated “ No arachnophobia way because there ’s no spiders ! ”

The move might be controversial to someDragon Agefans . Like I said , the giant beasts have been a staple of the series ’ monster at this detail , and I ’m sure there ’s as many citizenry who enjoy the mechanics a creature like a giant wanderer can convey to fighting ( poison attacks , immobilizing web , or hell , just the creep factor of being in a grimy cave when a huge , eight - legged lusus naturae starts mount down from the ceiling towards you ) as there are people who , like me , would want to toss their controller across a room every time a bunch of the goddam things spawned in the Deep Roads or wherever . Some people might lament thatDragon Age‘s enemy design will be less wide-ranging without them , but givenThe Veilguard‘s specific focussing on the Darkspawn and the agents of the returned Elven Gods , maybe it ’s o.k. that there ’s a routine more specified showdown to be found here .
But I for one am very happy to not have to anxiously fear entering the no doubt innumerable caves I ’ll find in my time inThe Veilguard , wondering if I ’m about to get triggered by the skittering of many peg . Dragon Age‘s spiders were always especially creepy-crawly to me , even as my own arachnophobia has dampen over the years . It was n’t just the way they moved , or their naturalistic depictions at a heightened scale , butDragon Agespiders were set to me by theear - splitting chittering shriekthey would make as they literally bulge into existence in a scrap encounter , condescend from rooftop . It was a parachuting panic that always had me slammingthe clit to pause combatevery time , even beyond the care of having to stare these fauna down as I planned how to take them out as soon as potential . It wasnasty !
Like I tell , the way I ’ve come to deal with it over the years is to play on PC and habituate mod that trade spiders and their sounds out for other enemy exemplar . Maybe , for the first time , the opposite can be the case forDragon Age‘s wanderer - fans : it ’s your act to find a mod that will put some back in ? peradventure some brave , demented soul will tote up that extremely cursed Spider - With - Human - Hands that was glimpsed in concept renders for the plot age ago , just for you .
