It ’s been almost a month on the route now .

One of the goal ofConnected Stateswas to see what moral could be gleaned from a wandering modus vivendi and then applied to a life more stationary . Well , 25 days is n’t so long in the grand scheme of thing , specially if I ’m staring down the drum of another 340 or so , but it ’s been long enough to make an watching or two .

I ’m hoping this slip may cease up making me a good person . Or better at being a someone . By that I mean it may serve me to address some life - long character flaws that have thus far resisted my honest intentions .

Tidy As Hell

My personal spaces have always been completely disorganized , messy , and covered with junk . This video from my old vane - series shows the actual state of my desk and room at the time .

Nothing has been able to solve this trouble . Not being grounded as a kid , not being afraid of daughter view it in my mid-20s , and not even when living with a woman who had her shit together far easily than I did . It ’s too former to say for sealed , but I think living in the van is solving it .

It ’s this simpleton : You ca n’t impart horseshit lying around when you ’re living in a caravan . You just ca n’t . Not only is it a pocket-sized space where every surface needs to be available , but it ’s in reality wild . If you have mare’s nest it ’s going to go fly while you ’re driving . It will dash and it will split , and it could ache you or let on into a million pieces . Hell , that happens often enough as it is when a cabinet spontaneously springtime open .

Anyway , for the first fourth dimension in my life , I do n’t have a desk covered in document . I do n’t have clothes lying around everywhere . Even more demented : I actually have a go at it where everything is . This is , essentially , a first for me . You naturally organized people can flout if you want , but I was n’t bear with your gift , and it ’s a enceinte stride toward solving a trouble I ’ve always wanted to address .

Minimize

This brings me to another likely improvement . I ’ve long been desire to descale back the sheer number of items I own . The whole “ possess minuscule ” ethos has always struck a chord with me , but I ’ve always been awful at populate by it . The van is now drive my hand . I only have so many cabinets and so much trunk space ; anything beyond that , I ca n’t take with me .

I imply , it ’s not like when I first displace to NY when I was 19 and I had two grip , a guitar , and a backpack with my laptop in it . The van holds more than that . But it ’s not far off . It makes me weigh each potential leverage or offer of a gift ( or a review unit ) and genuinely moot , “ A ) Do I need this ? And B ) Where would I put this in the caravan ? ” If I do n’t have a very good answer for both then I do n’t get it . It ’s that simple .

Something Wild

I ’m also pop out to reconnect with nature in a way I have n’t in twelvemonth . It ’s a slow process , almost as if we ’re a small leery of each other , but we ’ve had some breakthrough already , and Northern Michigan was the first staging ground . I had just cross the Mackinac Bridge into the Upper Peninsula and was driving along the glide of Lake Michigan when I saw a beach . I pulled over . It was hot . I threw some circuit card - shorts on and was in the water system within just a minute or two .

I am not a religious soul by any mean value , but I opine there ’s something interesting about how so many of the major universe religious haves ritual involving submerging in water . There ’s something about it where you re - emerge and feel … what ? dependable ? Clean ? New ?

Well I was back on the route five minutes later , but I felt changed . It was as if the spontaneousness of the moment had remind me of this stumble ’s potentiality , and the view fulfil me with pleasure . I felt ( and continue to feel ) get over with gratitude for the prospect to do stuff like this . It ’s crazy and I strive to be worthy of the opportunity .

A Lesson in Preparation

I found myself at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore near Munising , MI and I was whole floored by the beauty . luxuriant forests lead to rough and alien - look sandstone formations that plunge at once into Lake Superior . It was imagine to be a three - hour hike ( a la Gilligan ’s Island ) , but I maintain stopping to seek and capture falls , vegetation , sunbeam , and the glide .

I saw the sun crap a break for the horizon and I knew I should have turned and manoeuvre back to the new wave , but I could n’t . I wanted to see the Dominicus sink all the style , and so I stayed , despite knowing I ’d have to hike back by night . But that was n’t really a big hand . In my minuscule daypack I ’d managed to jampack in a slight bit of food , a water filter , a headlight , a tongue , and even my sleep bag . bad lawsuit scenario , I could just regain some balmy ground and pass out in the Grant Wood .

I end up boost back out by headlamp anyway , just because I did n’t know what the bear situation there was , but consume all that those natural selection item with me whole took the focus out of the spot . I could relish the sundown , and even the three mile cost increase out along a barely - marked track , because I had a backup plan slash to me .

It was kind of a microcosm of the whole vanguard experience . For the first time in my living I ’m pretty much ready to go no matter where I stop for the night . I ’ve generate everything I need with me . Clothes , food , a agency of wangle and wash myself . Since set forth , there have been very few days that I woke up knowing where I would be spending the next night . And again , I have n’t really been stressed out about it .

Staying Humble

After my dark in Painted Rocks , I found myself in Marquette , MI based on the recommendations of some folk on Twitter . My friend Rachel pinged her pal Tim who once go around there , and he ping his protagonist Jeremy who suppose I had to check out the 200 + miles of singletrack in theNoquemanon Trail Networkif I had a cycle . I did ! I ’d brought along aMontague Swissbike X90 , a fold great deal bike , and I was dying to prove it out .

I ended up choosing thePioneer Loop , which was labeled intermediate . I ’m generally pretty confident on a cycle , but I ’d never taken this one on dirt , I ’m moderately out of shape , and I was adjudicate out a new pair ofShimano A530clipless pedal for the first time . So I was taking it easy on the track and having a blast . Beautiful , dense wood with some really fun sections .

Right toward the last I was passing the entrance to some sections that were all black rhombus and double - blacks . I just continue past them until I ran into a cat who sound out , “ Have you tried Eh Line ? You ’ve got to try Eh Line , it ’s the proficient section here . ” So I rode over to the outset . It was a black baseball field jump track . I balk . I had n’t done any leap in two years . The guys tell the jumps were all tabletops so I could just roll over them if I require . Sounded good .

Eh Line was amazing . tight downhill with steep shoulder leading into each other and stacks upon tons of jumps . But like the guy enjoin , I could just roll over them , which was still fairly fun . I made it all the way to the bottom and was feeling good , confident , majestic of myself . There was one last fiddling jumping . I mean , it was literally the very last jump , and it was by far the modest of them . I said bed it , and went for it .

It hit it just a little bit off nerve centre , and make I was n’t going to shore unbent . Instinctively I started turning my front wheel before I was even on the ground . vainglorious mistake . As soon as I equal the land my motorcycle lurched to the right . I tried to correct but the ground was gentle , powdery dirt . The tyre slid out and I fail down like a ton of brick .

I ’d torn huge chunk of hide off , starting at my forearm and stretch out almost as far as my armpit . More disturbing was that breathing was painful and getting bad . I call my chum , who ’s a doctor and he recommended getting an x - beam just as a caution . Sounded like a collapse rib .

The point is that if I ’d just appease within my limit and been patient as I was receive the knack of riding a hardtail again after many year I would n’t be quite so battered and bruised right on now . More than anything , I was annoyed at myself . Annoyed at myself for listening to a cat ’s good word who did n’t hump my limitation , and annoyed at myself for feeling obligated to show off , if only for myself . There ’s a fine wrinkle between going out of your consolation geographical zone and being excessively risky . The exact stop at which that line lies can be deceptively concentrated to find .

Lessons Still to Learn

I preserve , as I always have , to fight with finding the right balance between piece of work , life , physical exertion , and log Z’s . In the year leading up to this tripper exercise and sleep had totally lead out the window . Now I have another thing to factor in : drive . Obviously , considering I ’m getting this update in a few days deep , I still have a slipway to go .

I ’m trying to take it easily on myself this first month or so . I ’ve had to cover more primer , more quickly than I go for will be the average for the rest of the trip . This has led to many 8 + hour days behind the wheel . Of naturally I have no one to blame for that but myself . I choose to push back tomy friend ’s wedding in Michigan , instead of fly front . Even when I ’m parked , though , it can be elusive to crumple down and bury my face in my electronic computer when all I want to do is explore , fulfill people , assay thing , take photos . gene in the summertime heat in the van , and it ’s a recipe for difficulty . Hopefully this will be solved when my tempo slows down some and I can start spend more time in places . Hopefully .

There are , of class , many other thing to learn on the route , and I imagine they ’ll confront themselves to me as I go . Either one at a time or all at once in an overpowering clump . Such is life .

Travelogue

I ’m way behind here , but here ’s a quick review to start getting us catch up . When we left off I was in Traverse City , MI and heading north . My first stop was Mackinac ( label MACK - in - aw , not MACK - in - ACK ) for some fudge . The streets of Mackinac are lined with candy shoppes and fudge places . It ’s fabled for it . I ’d been recount Marshall ’s was the post to go and holy crap I can see why . Utterly yummy .

Tourists swarm to the area and , fun fact , I ’ve memorize that the local cite to these tourists as , “ fudgies . ” Love it . Be really , between the fudge , candy Malus pumila , taffy , and other confect stores everywhere , Mackinac has got to be the diabetes cap of the world .

I was also introduced to the wonders of pasties ! That ’s pronounce PASS - tee , not like the things on stripper nipples . They ’re these light , almost croissant - same pastries stuffed with heart and vegetable . I had one lousy one , and then one awesome one at the place you see above .

Each one is a good two meals , though , so be careful .

Also , video computer memory are still alive and well in Michigan and much of the Midwest , it seems . It ’s like they ’re preserved in amber , screen them from the radioactivity of internet telegram .

From there I go to the Upper Peninsula I ’d been hear so much about , and went straight to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore . Absolutely stunning .

[ Pictured Rocks is frickin ’ astonishing . ]

From there I drop a duad mean solar day in Marquette , MI . Really cute townsfolk and I can tell you , Marquette has the serious emergency room I ’ve ever been to . Fast , friendly , and fair . If you ’re going to ache yourself , do it in Marquette , MI .

From there I had to make a bee line to Minneapolis , MN . I had a Quaker there who was going to a horse raceway that night at Canterbury Park . I grew up a mile from a airstream running , and yet I ’d never regard a knight airstream in my life . Today was the Clarence Shepard Day Jr. . So I drive the 7 hours straight there and made it just in time .

Unfortunately , this meant repel right through Wisconsin , which I palpate really bad about . What I saw of the res publica ( out the window ) was absolutely beautiful , and it ’s now high on my listing of billet to return so I can explore it properly . I did manage to block and get some Malva sylvestris curd , and yes , they did squeak , so at least those were legit .

The horse cavalry subspecies was interesting . A lost about 40 bucks betting or horses I make out nothing about . I had one of the weak drink of my entire life there ( a heap julep , because when in Rome ) , and I wipe out a bunch of fried food . Really , though , it was all about the people watch and the casual min of find out some four - legged beast run their center out .

[ The fellas ( seek to ) expect ruffianly . ]

play fact about the Twin Cities : The Ethiopian food is on point ! I mean , I ’ve eaten a deal of Ethiopian food all over the U.S. ( I heart messy stuff you eat up with your hands ) , and St. Paul has the best I ’ve ever tasted . This time around I went toFasikawhich was very legit . Downtown Minneapolis is developing a squeamish niggling cocktail scene , too . I had a most pleasant-tasting drink atParlour . Definitely urge .

I also got to catch up with an old acquaintance , Janet , from high schooltime who I had n’t seen in a decade or so . There ’s someone special about that kind of experience . older booster have the ability to meditate back to us images of who we used to be . We change so step by step that usually we do n’t even notice . Big gap in metre make the changes more obvious , and it ’s always fun to be reminding of things you ’d long forgotten but that depart an imprint on someone else . Or vice versa . Her beau was concerned in quadcopters so he and I walked to the parking area and took my DJI Phantom 3 out for a twisting . Really cool to see Minneapolis from that slant .

Then something rather wonderful find . My next plosive speech sound would be the Badlands of South Dakota , a place I ’d been dying to visit for more than a decade . My supporter Richard was conjecture to come with me for that lump but he had kinsfolk obligations and had to pull in out . I guess I ’d gotten used to the idea of doing that division with someone , so I asked my Facebook friends if anyone wanted to come .

To my amazement , my good friend Jake ( also a homie from high schoolhouse ) , said , “ When ? ” I said , “ Tomorrow ? ” Within 20 minutes he ’d booked flights . He ’d vanish into Minneapolis , and we ’d start heading west . We ’d expend 5 daylight in South Dakota , and then I ’d drop him in Billings , MT . I could n’t think it worked out .

Those 5 days would be an incredible risky venture , but there ’s too much to show and tell , so we ’ll have to save that for next metre . If you desire a discernment of that now you cancheck out my coverage of the seventy-fifth Anniversary Sturgis Motorcycle Rally , which include a pretty sweet-flavored drone shot , if I do say so myself

Anyway , thank you for reading and for contributing to this journeying . The advice for places to go and thing to see has been invaluable so far , and I hope to meet more of you before long . Until next time .
