Akiva Goldsman is heading up a squad that design to take Troma ’s marquee graphic symbol , the Toxic Avenger , and give him a syndicate - friendly makeover . Because , apparently , no one demanded it .
Listen , I screw retro - schlock as much as the next guy . No , the other next bozo . But I ’m having difficulty figuring out the upside to purchase the rights to The Toxic Avenger — and all the continuation and the vivify series and the laughable ledger — when it ’s reasonably clear that the franchise has long since run its course . And yet that ’s on the dot what Original Media and Dutch TV caller Endemol ( the folks behind boastful Brother and Deal or No Deal ) are doing , and they ’re making Toxie an environmentally witting hero to boot .
The only reason the first Toxic Avenger was interesting was because of its sweet , sugared ultraviolence . And sex . And gore . And the lines that Troma was unforced to cut across , because it had nothing to lose . But to seek and release Toxie into a bland cross - pollination between Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Captain Planet just seems ill - conceived .
mayhap I ’m wrong . perhaps Goldsman can find an interesting story to separate about an ex-wife - janitor who , after being douse by mutagenic goop , becomes a misshapen righter - of - wrongs . peradventure kids will whole jab it . But , for now , I ’ll adhere to my guns .
