Like another Friday Nox show , last dark ’s Smallville two - hr movie “ upshot ” prove that sometimes the weakest part of a show can be its central fictitious character ; Tom Welling showed more chop in his directing of the second hour than his carrying into action in front of the camera for the whole affair , and Clark ’s type has become so weigh down by foretelling of his destiny by this power point that he was easily the least fun part of what was otherwise an gratifying guilty pleasance of an evening ’s showing .
From a history perspective , Absolute Justice profit from being relatively self - contained , and was distinctly the mathematical product of comic author Geoff Johns ; the dialogue that could ’ve come flat from his JSA strip , and the episode contained his trademark of shout - outs to amusing persistence and injokes ( Most obscure / revalue by me : Chloe call the JSA a Secret Society of Super - Villains . I ’m easily proud of ) and a patch that spun personal conflicts into melodrama fulfill with conspiracy and a large story behind the scenes . But it work ; there was a sense of scale and history to the episode that the serial publication does n’t usually manage , and each new character – even the quickly dispatch , like Sylvester Pemberton and Wesley Dodds – occur across as interesting enough ( and likeable enough , as well ) to want to see more of . The murders of the JSA members made the Icicle a believable terror , but Amanda Waller and Checkmate root for his strings also filled in what otherwise would ’ve been plotholes ( How did he find them ? Why are n’t the police doing any better in hunting him down ? etc . ) .
The Justice Society that we met – Hawkman , Doctor Fate and Stargirl , for the most part , with cameo from the Star - Spangled Kid and the Sandman ( and even spry cameo from Wildcat , Green Lantern , the Atom and the Flash ) – seemed to come in from another show ; one less angst - ridden and unapologetic for its superhero line of descent – one that felt unlike Heroes or , well , Smallville , and in a camply refreshing way . They brought with them – or , more likely , Geoff Johns did – a give-and-take and wit that the show often lacks , and also a speed and lightness that worked better than the show ’s common atomic number 84 - faced drama ; with this many superheroes around – and off - hand deus ex machina minute like Doctor Fate magically restoring John Jones ’ powers just because – the show just seemed in effect than usual , somehow .
It was n’t perfect , of course ; it ’s Smallville , after all , and that mean disappointing special effects ( The endeavor to translate Doctor Fate ’s ankh - symbolism just seemed CGI gimmickry ) and outfits ( Really , Hawkman ’s wing : Fail ) , as well as periodic WTF moments so as to move the story along ( The Daily Planet remain the only major paper whose authority are entirely empty when the plot of land demands , and evidently everyone can break into any edifice if they need to ) . But it was fun ; slaphappy and full of derring - do , with much more comic geekery thrown in than normal . For this week , at least , Smallville went outside of its comfort geographical zone to research more of the DC Universe than ever before and benefit from the experience . Given an termination that suggested that Checkmate is here to stay , here ’s hop the show extend on this path for awhile .
